Dirty Dancing

March 17th, 2009

In 2007, the wildly successful musical Dirty Dancing sashayed its way to Toronto’s popular stage and the buzz shows no sign of quieting. The play is based on the 1987 smashing big screen flick with the same name. At the time, it emerged as a low budget film that became a blockbuster - earning over $300 million worldwide and with a soundtrack that merited two multi-platinum albums. One song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy for the Best Duet.
Written by Eleanor Bergstein, Dirty Dancing is a love story set in 1963 between an upper-class, college bound vacationer and a working class member of the resort staff. Seventeen years old Jane Baby Houseman - the girl with two left feet -falls in love with Johnny, a professional dancer from the wrong side of the tracks. Naturally, the course of true love fails to run smoothly when Dr. Houseman, Baby’s dad thinks the young man is unfit for his daughter - mistakenly believing he has fathered a child with his dance partner Penny Johnson. The play’s scenery moves with the cast, creating fluidity in the performance. Pieces of the stage rise up and revolve to whisk the characters from one setting to another. The video backdrops of sweeping forests, torrential rainstorms, winding mountain highways and even a lake are all spectacular. Even the sky changes from a mellow blue in the morning to the sharp pinks of sunset. Kudos to set designer Stephen Brimson Lewis! The theater’s surround sound system completes the effect as crickets gently hum in the background during nightfall. Kate Champion’s choreography is a display of raw athleticism, supple grace and balletic elegance.

Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma. When Keith grew young, his family moved to Moore, Oklahoma. His grandmother was the owner of a supper club and Keith became interested in the musicians who came there to play. He got his first guitar when he was just 8 years old. Keith attended Moore High School where he played on the football team.Keith graduated from Moore High School .

He went to work as a derrick hand in the booming oil fields of Oklahoma in 1979. He soon became an operation manager due to his hard work.

Toby Keith was successful in forming the Easy Money Band at the age of 20. They played local bars as he continued to work in the oil industry. At times, he would have to leave in the middle of a gig if he was paged to work in the oil field.

Career
Keith went to Nashville, Tennessee in 1993. Keith hung out and busked on Music Row and at a place called Houndogs. He tried to contact many record companies in the city by distributing copies of a demo tape the band had made but all his efforts ended in smoke. He had no other option but to return home hopelessly. However, Toby Keith had promised himself to have a recording contract by the time he was 30 years old or give up on music as a career. He had already passed that age without any prospects for a recording contract.

Good luck happened to Keith when a flight attendant and one of his fan gave a copy of Keith’s demo tape to Harold Shedd, a Mercury Records executive, while he was traveling on a flight she was working. Shedd was impressed what she heard . She went to see Keith perform live and then signed him to a recording contract with Mercury.

His debut single, Should’ve Been a Cowboy (1993), proved to be a super hit. It went to number 1 on the Billboard country singles chart. Keith’s self-titled debut album was certified platinum. Other hit singles included A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action and Wish I Didn’t Know Now.

Keith moved briefly to Polydor Records and released his next two albums Boomtown (1994) and Blue Moon (1996). The albums met with grand success. Boomtown went gold and Blue Moon was certified platinum.

Keith was also featured on the Beach Boys’ now out-of-print 1996 album Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 In 1996. He performed a cover of their 1963 hit Be True to Your School with the Beach Boys themselves providing the harmonies and backing vocals. Keith started working on his next album How Do You Like Me Now (1999) at Mercury but he could not continue with Mercury due to creative differences with Mercury. He purchased the rights to the album and moved to DreamWorks Nashville. The album went double platinum and the title song How Do You Like Me Now was a number 1 single for 5 weeks.

Keith also availed the opportunities of doing a series of television advertisements for Telecom USA for their discount long distance telephone service 10-10-220. Keith became a superstar and household name because of the ads and his latest hit album. On June 19, 2002, Keith was appeared at the very first Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (then NWA-TNA) weekly pay-per-view.

Keith launched his own record label called Show Dog Nashville on August 31, 2005 after parting ways with Universal Music Group which had since bought DreamWorks. Its first release was Keith’s album White Trash With Money, followed by the soundtrack to Broken Bridges.

Keith filmed Broken Bridges in the Autumn of 2005. Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld were the writers and Steven Goldmann was the director of this film. This feature film from Paramount/CMT Films was released on September 8, 2006. Keith plays Bo Price, a country musician whose career has seen better times. Minnesota Wild Tickets

March 5th, 2009

The Minnesota Wild is a well-known professional ice hockey team from Saint Paul, Minnesota. Their symbol, which is a bear, is also a popular symbol of theirs. The Minnesota Wild is a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The team first began playing in 2000.

The National Hockey League awarded Minnesota an expansion franchise [1997]. This meant that they would play in the 2000-2001 season. The 6 finalist team names for this season included: Minnesota Northern Lights, Minnesota Voyageurs, Minnesota Blue Ox, Minnesota Freeze, Minnesota White Bears and Minnesota Wild.

In 2000-01, the Minnesota Wild did not have much success. However, it showed that it could go on and improve with every season. One game during this season that was worth taking note of included the first visit of the Dallas Stars. The crowd turnout for this match was a record one with over 18,000. In the following season, the Wild got off to a flying start and claimed 1 point out of their first 7 games. Yet, they finished in the last place. The point to note was that the team showed strong signs of improvement compared to the previous season. As a second-year speedster, Gaborik had a good season with 30 goals, while Andrew Brunette scored 69 points.

In the 2003-04, the Wild were short-handed. The team struggled in the first month, but they managed to get their two important left-wingers signed. However, the problem they faced was getting into game shape, and their struggles carried on through November. Though the team finished with strong wins, it could not climb out of its weak position. The Wild were the last to finish in the competitive Northwest Division. As the season progressed, it was clear that the Wild were preparing to trade some of their older players. This would include players like Brad Bombardir and Jim Dowd.

In the 2004-05 season, there was no play because there was a lockout. Former Wild player Sergei Zholtok died of a heart condition during a match. It is known that Zholtok died in the arms of Darby Hendrickson [Minnesotan and former Wild player].

In the 2005-06 season, the Wild again finished last in the Northwest Division. They were 8 points behind Vancouver.

For the 2006-07 season, the Wild signed veteran Free Agents, Mark Parrish, Kim Johnsson, and Keith Carney. The Wild made it to the playoffs in 2007. This was the 2nd time they did so. However, they were knocked out by the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks in the first round.

Minnesota Sports & Entertainment owns the Minnesota Wild. This is a limited partnership established by Bob Naegele Jr. who is a majority owner. The Minnesota Swarm in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) also belongs to this partnership. With owning both these teams, the partnership also operates the Saint Paul RiverCentre, the Xcel Energy Center, and Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Additionally, the partnership owns and operates 317 on Rice Park. This was previously known as the historic Minnesota Club.

Lil Wayne Tickets

March 5th, 2009

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. is an original name of an American rapper, whose stage name is Lil Wayne. He was born on September 27, 1982 in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans of Louisiana. At present, he is a part of a reunited rap group named “Hot Boys”.

He had worked with Cash Money Records and later with B.G. on the album named “True Story”, where he had a chance to have his own recording for the label. Lil Wayne had his first album with Hot Boys in 1997; it was named as “Get It How U Live”.

Later his solo album came out in the year of 1999 with the name of Block. The album had a debut in the top ten on the American Billboard 200 chart; it is also interesting to point out that he was nominated for “Best New Artist” from The Source magazine in the very same year.

The success story had started and very soon, he was featured on other rappers’ singles, including “Bling Bling” by B.G. and others.

Lil Wyne had reached up to a new height of glory and fame after the great success of his debut and two other albums. During that period, he appeared on several mix tapes and singles of other artists.

Lil Wayne had started his educational period with the gifted program of Lafayette Elementary School, and he was in the drama club. of Eleanor McMain Secondary School. He had got a chance of meeting Bryan Williams, at the age of eleven.

He was also a famous rapper and owner of Cash Money Records. Lil Wayne had recorded freestyle raps on Williams’ answering machine.

Williams had decided to prepare and nourish the young Carter, and the act of including him in Cash Money-distributed songs, was a part of it. He was dropped out of school at age 14 but later earned his GED.

At the age of 12, he had played the part of the Tin Man in his middle school drama club’s production of The Wiz. Carter had been married to Antonia “Toya” Johnson; she was his high school love. The two were married on Valentines Day of 2004; and got divorced in the year of 2006.

The Recording Industry Association of America has certified Tha Carter III two times platinum, on July 14, 2008. On July 14, 2008, he has plans to re-release Tha Carter III with all new tracks.

After his initial success with Hot boys and with a solo career, he had a release of another album in the year of 2000, named Lights Out, but it had failed to gain the level of success like his debut. It is interesting to note that it was still gold by RIAA.

There was a lot of criticism, over him on the issue, as it was considered that he was using the power of the hot Boys days” success. The critics had pointed out the lack of coherent narratives in his verses as evidence that he had yet to mature to the level of his fellow Hot Boys.

Lil Wayne’s third album “500 Degreez” was released in the year of 2002, which had followed the format of his previous two, with significant contributions from the Hot Boys and Mannie Fresh.

Lil has announced many projects for the future like following Tha Carter III, including a collaboration album I Can’t Feel My Face with rapper Juelz Santana that has been in production for several years

Denver Nuggets Tickets

March 5th, 2009

The Denver Nuggets are a pro basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. They play in the NBA.

Franchise history
Early years
The team was originally slated to play in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Denver. They tended to struggle in the postseason early and failed to make a championship game during this span. They had a solid lineup led by Byron Beck and Larry Jones, then later by Beck and Ralph Simpson. Controversial rookie Spencer Haywood joined the team for the 1969-70 season.

1980s
Brown left the team in 1979. It ended in 1981, when they hired Doug Moe as a head coach. During the 1980s, the Nuggets would often score in excess of 115 points a game, and during the 1981-82 season, they scored at least 100 points in every game.

1990s
Moe left the team in 1990, and was replaced by Paul Westhead. Westhead gave the green light for players like Michael Adams and Chris Jackson. However, Westhead cared even less about defense than Moe. As a result, while the Nuggets set more scoring records, they also set records for points surrendered. They finished with the worst record in the league for two seasons in a row.

Denver took a positive step in rebuilding by drafting 7-2 Georgetown University center in 1992. Denver finished 24-58 that year. Denver flirted with history in the 1997-98, by nearly setting the mark for fewest wins in an 82 game season. They would tie the NBA’s all-time worst single-season losing streak at 23 games. Several years later, the Nuggets tied for the worst record in the NBA in 2002-03.

Present
The team has shown signs of another renaissance for the 2003-04 season, with the drafting of Carmelo Anthony. In just two months of the season, they recorded more wins than they had in 5 months of play in 2002-03. He added crucial personnel including Andre Miller, Nene, Earl Boykins, Marcus Camby, and Jon Barry. In April they became the first franchise in NBA history to qualify for the postseason following a sub-20-win campaign the previous year. They were eliminated in the first round, four games to one, by the Minnesota Timberwolves. On December 28, 2004, head coach Jeff Bzdelik was replaced by Michael Cooper, before finally hiring George Karl as a permanent replacement. In the playoffs, however, the Nuggets could not survive the powerhouse defense of Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs. After winning game one in San Antonio, the Nuggets proceeded to lose the next four games and lost the series 4-1. The Nuggets picked 20th in the 2005 NBA Draft.

For the first time in 18 years in 2005-06, the club won the Northwest division title. This placed the team in the third seed of the Western Conference playoffs. Due to their relatively weak record the Nuggets were forced to play the Los Angeles Clippers They defeated the Nuggets in 5 games.

On, December 18, 2006, Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith and Nene were suspended by the NBA.

Iverson arrives
On December 19, 2006, the Nuggets traded Joe Smith, Andre Miller, and two first-round drafts picks in the 2007 draft to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ivan McFarlin and superstar Allen Iverson. On January 11, 2007, Earl Boykins, Julius Hodge, and cash considerations were traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for point guard Steve Blake. However, chemistry would be an issue as the Nuggets finished the regular season with the #6 seed. In the playoffs, the Nuggets got off to a fast start, winning game 1. However, in an eerie repeat of the 2005 playoffs, the Spurs bounced back to win the next four, as the Nuggets were eliminated in the first round in five games for the fourth straight year.
